On 15th May 2014, Katong Toastmasters Club celebrated its 9th anniversary! It was a joyous occasion of celebration!
Word of the Day: mien /meen/ (noun)
Demeanour, attitude, personality
For example, He had a serious and stern mien but we soon
found out he was friendly and welcoming when we spoke to him.
Club President Joni spoke about how being in a risk zone
is where all change, growth and transformation takes place. She shared the story of a mother eagle that
pushes her eaglets out of the nest to help them find their wings and soar. In
the same way, sometimes we need to push people out of their comfort zone to
help them achieve their potential and reach greater heights.
4 speakers took to the stage this evening. P2 speaker Eliz in her speech Generalists vs Specialists questions the age-old saying
that a Jack of all trades is a Master of none. She shares with us three
benefits of being a Jack of all trades or generalist: (1) career progression,
(2) business profits (think PepsiCo vs Coca Cola) and (3) ability to survive.
P3 speaker Yumei in her speech Myths about Introverts, debunked 3 myths about
introverts, namely (1) introverts are shy, (2) they are aloof or arrogant, (3)
they are not good leaders or speakers. She ends off by saying she embraces her
introversion but will make an effort to get out of her shell more often.
P5 speaker Geri gave us a futuristic speech with the intriguing title “Welcome to
tomorrow today”. She shares some trends
about how advancing technology will make what is abnormal today the new normal
tomorrow. Thus her advice to her friend’s 15-year-old daughter: It does not
matter what she chooses to study as long as she stays curious, seeks to understand others, and stays healthy
in mind, body and spirit.
Advanced speaker Rajendra presented AP3 from the Storytelling manual. He shares a touching story ‘The sin and the sinner’
about a respected man Baba who confronted a bandit but was rebutted and blinded
by the violent man. Years later, the bandit sought refuge in his house and Baba
did not give him away to the police as promised. The bandit was so transformed
by his kindness and forgiveness that he gave himself up to the police. The
story holds a strong message of forgiveness… We can hate
the sin but love the sinner.
