Katong Toastmasters Club

On 19 January 2017,  we witnessed the birth of a collaboration between Katong TMC and Tampines Changkat TMC (TCTMC). Our joint meeting was double the fun, excitement and learning, thanks to the highly energetic and enthusiastic members from TCTMC. Sergeant-At-Arms (SAA) Malcolm invited everyone to share their predictions for 2017. We had auspicious predictions of fulfilled goals and dreams, as well as hilarious ones about failed attempts at losing weight. Club President Raj highlighted Toastmasters tagline "Where Leaders Are Made", emphasizing the fact that in Toastmasters, we create leaders, not just speakers. A leader is someone who creates thoughts that shape the world. He shared about a local hero in India, Sunitha Krishnan, a social activist.  She was gang-raped at the age of 15 yet failed by the law, media and society. 2016 ended on a high note with our Christmas meeting. There was a feast consisting of salad, pasta, beehoon, fishball, chips and dips, peach jelly, fruits and marshmallows with chocolate fondue, and an irrestitable rum & raisin log cake to tantalise our taste buds. SAA Ida invited us to share about the best thing that happened to us in 2016. For Aarti, it was joining a mindfulness workshop and improving relations with her son; for Geri, it was going on a trip with her family  to Sydney to celebrate her parents' 50th wedding anniversary. Our club President Raj shared about the values of giving and forgiving through the inspiring story of Sindhutai Sapkal also known as Mother of Orphans. She is an Indian social worker and social activist known for her work of raising orphan children. She was born into a poor family, married off at age 10 and later abandoned by her husband. SAA INTRODUCTION With the buzz of the U.S.A. presidential elections going around, Sergeant-At-Arms Tracey Yuen began the meeting by asking members and guests, “What would you do if you became the President (of a particular country)?” Participants gave both logical and humorous answers such as compulsory dining at hawker centres, giving 28 days of annual leave, introducing cycling routes on all roads, parenting courses for parents, more jobs for talented foreigners, allowing cats in HDB flats, and having Kids’ Cook Out Day. PROJECT SPEECHES There was a line-up of 3 speakers, all presenting from the advanced projects manuals. First speaker Leanne de Souza presented  AP1 The Keynote Address  from the Professional Speaker Manual at an imaginary HR Summit with the title ‘How to Future Proof Your Career’.
