Open House April 2014

Our chapter meeting on 17 April 2014 doubled up as an Open House where we encouraged all members to invite a friend or a family member to attend the meeting.  The response was so overwhelming that we did not even have enough food to feed everyone.

The logistics team did a great job of decorating the room with a montage of photographs and Joni came to the rescue with mini cupcakes as desserts.

Vera, who is also the Division Z Public Relations Officer, gave a presentation about the benefits of joining Toastmasters.

P1 The Ice Breaker: Cwenn spoke about how "Life is simple and yet not so simple". She shared about her hometown Penang, her move to Singapore and initial struggle to eke out a living. Now she is making a comfortable living and happy with life in Singapore.

Chieu, an engineer by training, tells us why engineers are not boring people, contrary to popular belief. He convinces us that engineers are smart and logical.

P3 Get to the Point: Parul shared with us the 5S of wine-tasting which involves many of our senses: See, Swirl, Sniff, Sip, Savour.  At the same time, she demonstrates with a glass of wine to help us remember the 5 points. Unforgettable!

AP4 The Touching Story (from the Storytelling Manual): Vera aroused our emotions with a touching story of how she found out about the difficult family situation of a couple with an autistic child. Through this episode, she realised we should be less judgemental and more ready to stretch out a helping hand.

Table Topics: Visiting toastmaster Linda Leo was fun-loving and animated as she gave out cards to everyone in the audience. The cards were used to call out speakers. Her topics consisted of pairs of opposing or unrelated words.  The speakers would have to think of a way to link the two words.

Visitor Zeb entertained us with his choice of Wife or Mistress. He doesn't mind either one. In his words, "Life is full of possibilities!"  He was voted Best Table Topics Speaker.

Parul was voted Best Speaker for the evening. Well done!

DTM Kan Kin Fung was voted Best Evaluator for his evaluation of Vera's speech.

A big thank you to our visiting toastmasters Kan Kin Fung, Ratna and Linda Leo.

Thumbs up for Katong Toastmasters Club!
