17 July 2014 Meeting Synopsis

What an inspirational, energizing evening! Following the induction of Katong Toastmasters new Exco Members, 22-year-old inspirational speaker Hitesh Ramchandani spoke about succeeding in the face of cerebral palsy. "Will you give up or will you keep moving?" asked the Singapore Institute of Management student who amazed everyone with his humour, tenacity, and spunkiness. Hitesh, who has had to overcome the challenge of doing everyday things that most of us take for granted, definitely never gives up. Aparna Saxena impressed by launching into her P1 ice-breaker project with no notes. The only daughter of a scientist and a banker, Aparna learned at a young age to make her own decisions and question the status quo. Her guiding principle is that life is meant to be lived and not subsisted. And hence her motto: YOLO! "You only live once" Doing her P2 was Cwenn Goh spoke of building confidence and overcoming fear. SAA Leena recognized Presidents Ida and Joni for their commitment and contribution to Katong TMC by presenting them with gifts. In her role as VPM, Leena also conducted New Members Induction for Ava, Chieu and Cwenn to officially welcome them to our club. They were presented with notebooks for them to take notes during meetings. Prepared Speeches P1 Ava Ang How I became an artist turned entrepreneur From Penang, Ava moved to Singapore 8 years ago. She was fascinated with colour pencils and crayons when young and enjoyed drawing. She was eventually offered a scholarship to pursue a Fine Arts degree. Her paintings were exhibited and bought by Mahathir's son. Upon her move to Singapore, she was offered a job as a graphic designer. Later, she had stints with Tiger Airways, Air Asia and Shell Petroleum. No dream is too big and no dreamer is too small. Now onto a internet start up business. No Frills Meeting May 2014

On 29th May 2014, Katong Toastmasters Club held its second No Frills Meeting for the year. There were 6 speakers lined up for the evening. All set to start our meeting! Glad to see Nicholas and Benjamin joining us. First Timer Glenn Lim on delivering his first speech P1 speaker Glenn finally broke the ice about himself.  He told us about his family background and beautiful memories he had of his colourful childhood days. He even brought the song book from his alma mater Ama Keng Primary School! P2 speaker Chieu told interesting stories about the Three Little Frogs. Each story has a moral to it and teaches about perseverance and turning negatives into positives.  P3 speaker Ram Shinde shares Lessons Learnt from Playing Poker. He opines that life is not about luck but rather discipline, calculation and making the right decisions. P4 speaker Parul shares about Adventures in the Air. Katong Turns 9!

On 15th May 2014, Katong Toastmasters Club celebrated its 9th anniversary! It was a joyous occasion of celebration! Word of the Day: mien /meen/ (noun) Demeanour, attitude, personality For example, He had a serious and stern mien but we soon found out he was friendly and welcoming when we spoke to him . Club President Joni spoke about how being in a risk zone is where all change, growth and transformation takes place.  She shared the story of a mother eagle that pushes her eaglets out of the nest to help them find their wings and soar. In the same way, sometimes we need to push people out of their comfort zone to help them achieve their potential and reach greater heights. 4 speakers took to the stage this evening. P2 speaker Eliz in her speech Generalists vs Specialists questions the age-old saying that a Jack of all trades is a Master of none.
