Willa Wonka -themed meeting 19 Nov 2020

We had a stupendous & splendid chocolicious Willy Wonka-themed meeting tonight!

Members and guests brandishing their favourite chocolates!

SAA Lydia started the meeting promptly by greeting everyone and getting guests to introduce themselves and share about a time when they got lucky and won something.

Club President shared the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory briefly and how Charlie was a boy who remained humble despite his win. He was able to share his windfall with the rest of his impoverished family. The key takeaway: Happiness is not just having what we want, but sharing what we have.
We were delighted to induct 6 new members into our club, led by VP Membership Ida Lee. We welcome Rachel, Haifa, Sharon, Bee Bee, Emi and Fook Tiang into our Katong family!
LE John Poon shared “flamboyant” as Word of the Day, and we happily tagged it to people and speeches, as in our flamboyant Club President. 😊
First speaker Sharon in her Icebreaker speech “Little Star, Big Dreamer” shared her dreams of wanting to become a “star” but changed direction when she interned at a childcare centre and found her passion for taking care of little kids.
Second speaker Emi in her Icebreaker speech “Run or not” talked about her passion for running and how it was fuelled by her love for food. She lives by the motto: Run to eat, eat to run.
Third speaker Harleen presented her Dynamic Leadership L1P2 Evaluation & Feedback - second speech entitled “Harleen’s guide to Approaching Adulthood”. She shared about the complexities of adulthood she has encountered 7 weeks into her first job and how she is learning to navigate them.
Final speaker Kah Heng gave a talk on “Monkey Business” for his Dynamic Leadership L1P3 Research and Presenting project. He spoke about his love for nature and how he would occasionally encounter monkeys on his hikes. He also shared practical tips on what to do and what not to do based on his research.
Our four evaluators Rubin, Rosalind, Annette (from CSI TMC) and Srinivas (from Malaysia’s MAD TMC) gave insightful and impactful feedback to affirm and help our speakers improve.
Table Topics Session led by Marina was choke-full of topics about chocolates! These were the chocolicious topics she presented:
Geri: Chocolate is the answer, who cares what’s the question?
Jerry: “Chocolate is happiness that you can eat” – Ursula Kuhaupt
Ayush: “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get!” – Forrest Gump
Gowri: A little sweetness can drown out a whole lot of bitterness.
Bee Bee: “Life is like chocolate. You should eat it piece by piece and let it slowly melt on your tongue.” – Nina Sandmann
Li Xian: Chocolate is like medicine – but as with medicine, the key is the proper dose.
Fook Tiang: You are a winner in a competition. The jury wants to award you with a prize of your choice: 1000 USD or a yearly supply of chocolate. Which would you choose and how would you benefit from it?
Yee Fee: You wish to make up for a huge mistake you made to your loved one. What very specific type of chocolate will help you the best in this situation?
(Which topic do you like the most? Share with us in the comments below!)
LE John showcased his linguistic prowess by sharing the various brickbats and bouquets he picked up. He gave us a revision on conditional sentences and appropriate use of verbs and phrases. We were wowed by his delightful and zestful presentation.

Huge congratulations to all the winners for tonight:
Best Speaker: Emi Chua
Best Evaluator: Anette Lin
Best Table Topics Speakers: Geri Kan & Chu Fook Tiang (it’s a tie!)
