17 March 2016 Meeting Synopsis

Sergeant-At-Arms Leena got us started with a round of introductions by drawing from a stack of words we must use to describe our day. Some of us had fun, hectic, quiet, sunny and productive days.

President Aarti shared with us two moving stories of fortitude about teenage girls who faced great challenges in life but went on to overcome them. Read the full speech here.

PREPARED SPEECHES
Our line-up of speakers included Rosalind, Cwenn, Eliz and Peter.

Rosalind presented her Project 1 The Icebreaker about being a dreamer. She had envisaged being a teacher, a nurse and a journalist at different times of her life. However, those dreams did not last long. In the end, she worked in the HR profession. She continues to dream about pursuing other passions in life and urge all of us to never stop dreaming.

Cwenn, in her P5 speech entitled "How My Hands Healed My Heart", shared a moving experience about a break-up that pained her deeply and how signing up for a leather-making course allowed her to start on a journey of healing. Through using her hands to create beautiful leather products painstakingly, she was able to pick up the bits and pieces of her heart. She learnt three important lessons through the experience: of having a relationship with self, learning to take action and learning to let go.

Eliz gave a humorous and heart-warming speech about sisterly bond for Project 8 Get Comfortable with Visual Aids. She used large photos to enliven her speech as she related various anecdotes about her sister and her during childhood and school days.

Peter presented his contest speech "Finish what you started".  He recounted his experience taking part in a half-marathon and how an older runner gave him a push in the back to encourage him when he was falling back. The expectation of his daughter waiting for him at the finish line also gave him the impetus to complete the race. In the same way, we can finish what we started by having determination, motivation and encouragement from others.

Eliz was voted the Best Speaker for the evening.

TABLE TOPICS
Four guests who visited us, Jere, Shaun, Emilie and Cayton, gamely took on the Table Topics Challenge. Defriceni also took to the stage to talk about sunrise. Cayton was voted the Best Table Topics Speaker for his take on how to find the ideal job. He shared about a Venn diagram that encapsulates the ideal job - intersection of what you are good at, what you enjoy doing and what people will pay you to do.

PROJECT EVALUATIONS
Roann pointed out that Rosalind's speech was well-organised and easy to follow. The content was well chosen and allowed us to understand her better. She encouraged Rosalind to consider using stage positioning to reinforce the three points in her speech.

Ida wowed us with the use of Cwenn's name as an acronym for her strengths - C for character, W for warmth as a speaker, E for entertaining in her use of voice and body language to enliven her speech, N for nimbleness in her gestures and N for natural speaker. She encouraged Cwenn to increase her volume so that the audience can hear her clearly.
Ida was voted the Best Evaluator.

Joni enjoyed Eliz's humorous and entertaining speech about her sister. She used three Ps to talk about three ways to improve in her use of visual aids. The first P is for placement of the aids, the second P for the Point - does the visual aid reinforce a point in the speech? and the third P is for prop - consider using appropriate props as an alternate visual aid.

Our LE Kok Peng highlighted many lovely words and phrases that we can add to our vocabulary. Here are some examples: "protaganist", "premiere", "indomitable spirit", "unabashed", "uncanny ability", "unfathomable bond", "meteoric rise", "wallowed in my pain". There were also commendable use of similes and metaphors such as "serve as a beacon", "wept buckets of tears", "like an ostrich hiding its head in the sand", "free-spirited animal", "my insides were giggling" and "cruise towards the finishing line".
