SYNOPSIS FOR CHAPTER MEETING ON 17 JUNE 2010
Our June chapter meeting featured a special segment: Club Officers Installation. Division Z Governor Lum Sau Ying did the honours of discharging the present EXCO members and officially installing the incoming EXCO members. The incoming EXCO members present that evening included President Nik Chua, VPE Chew Teck Siong, Asst VPM Ben Xu, Asst VPPR Malcolm Chen and Asst SAA Jesslin Ong. They took turns to solemnly affirm their commitment and dedication to fulfil their duties in their respective roles. Club members, in return, pledged to support the EXCO members and work as a team to help the club grow and flourish.
Club President Nik Chua presented his debut Opening Address. He shared an inspiring story about physically disabled contestants at a Special Olympics who turned around to help one boy who had stumbled and was crying. In the end, they all linked arms and walked back to the finishing line. In the same way, we at Katong Toastmasters will give each other mutual support and walk to the finish line together. 1st speaker Ruby Nguyen from Vietnam TMC presented her P4 (How to Say It) speech about fear, entitled "The Little Voice". Using the first person perspective, she gave a fascinating account of how fear operates in people’s lives. Ben Xu’s P7 (Research Your Topic) speech was an in-depth discussion about tropical fruits. Malcolm proposed a toast to Joni in his AP1 Mastering the Toast, after recounting personal anecdotes to demonstrate how she was an encouragement to him.
Last speaker Joni Siah presented her final project AP5 The Abstract Concept from the Speaking to Inform Manual. She demystified the ancient art of acupuncture in her talk “Understanding Acupuncture”. She explained the concept of acupuncture and shared anecdotes on its effectiveness as a treatment for ailments such as lower back pain.
Evaluator Xiong Dan, incoming President of NUS Alumni TMC, evaluated Ruby’s P4 speech. He commended her use of first-person perspective, which was refreshing, and encouraged her to rehearse her speech more to avoid awkward pauses when she referred to her notes.
Maurice Neo from NUSS TMC, commended Ben for his colourful and informative presentation. Tips for improvement included clearer enunciation and better pacing to avoid rushing at the conclusion.
Seh Leng, Area S4 Governor from Brilliant Advanced TMC, liked Malcolm’s warm and affable persona and his use of personal anecdotes. She educated us about the protocol of toasting and suggested pre-arrangement be made to ensure smooth execution of the toast, which should involve everyone in the audience.
Ler Wee Meng affirmed Joni’s competence and confidence as an advanced speaker. He highlighted areas of improvement such as set-up of the laptop to enable ease of viewing, better synchronization between the slides and speech, and spacing out the content of the slides instead of having too much information in one slide.
Table Topics Master Chew Teck Siong stretched our imagination by asking us what our dream would be if we were specified objects like a plastic cup, a name tag, a vacuum cleaner and shoes. Malcolm wanted to be the best-of-the-range vacuum cleaner so he could keep the master’s house spick and span, while making his mother proud. Wee Meng won our hearts by sharing his dream of being in the shoes of great men like Abraham Lincoln and by declaring how he would walk the distance with them.
Language Evaluator Kenneth Tian made his debut presentation and shared with us many bouquets he picked up. He highlighted the use of alliterations such as “depth and duration”, “faint fragrance” and “changes and challenges”; metaphors such as “(club) grow from a toddler to a mature adult”, “premature death” and “walk together to the finish line” and descriptive words like “elusive but irrestible flavour” and “budding toastmasters”.
